The Office of Public Works (OPW) is responsible for the conservation and presentation of over 780 National Monuments in State ownership or guardianship. The statutory role of the OPW in respect of this estate is set out in National Monument Acts 1931-2023.

Dungaire Castle is not a National Monument in the ownership or guardianship of the State and as such the OPW has no role in relation to its care and conservation.

The OPW is funded annually through the Oireachtas to fulfil its functions in caring for the National heritage estate. The OPW has no role in providing direct funding to Local Authorities in respect of heritage or heritage activities, this is the remit of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
