I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are Garda dog kennels in a number of locations across the country and projects to upgrade or install new facilities, in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW), are ongoing. These are in addition to the normal maintenance and upkeep of existing facilities. Key recent upgrades include:

Kilmainham

  • 2022 - New dog agility area
  • 2020 - Upgrade to dog wash area
  • 2019 - Groundworks and new kennels installed
Galway
  • 2018 - New kennel facilities at new Regional HQ
Cork
  • 2022 - Relocation of Regional Dog Unit, including new kennels
The current priority for An Garda Síochána in relation to the Garda Dog Unit is the development of a new National Centre of Excellence. This project is at an initial stage of development with the OPW. No site has yet been identified or secured, and detailed design will be underway as soon as a suitable site has been identified. In addition to the ongoing work around site selection, An Garda Síochána is also researching similar facilities in other Police Services to inform the design of the National Centre of Excellence.
