Question 501: To ask the Minister for Transport his views on whether it is appropriate to reduce funding for public transport operators which will lead to a further reduction in services at a time when he has stated aims of reducing the reliance on the private car for transport; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Despite the difficult economic and budgetary circumstances, funding for public service obligation transport services provided by the CIÉ companies has been maintained at a high level. A total of €276 million has been provided for such services in 2010. In addition, a total of over €600 million in Exchequer capital has been provided in 2010 for investment in public transport infrastructure.
It is a matter for the companies within the revenues available to them from Exchequer funding and fares revenue to maintain services at the highest level possible while ensuring their ongoing financial viability.
