The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides funding to a range of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) through a series of grant schemes dedicated to delivering on the Government's priorities at home and abroad. These include supports for international development, development education in Ireland, reconciliation on the island of Ireland, emigrant support, disseminating information on the European Union, responding to humanitarian emergencies and promoting international peace and stability.
In the five years 2020 to 2024, almost €1.3 billion was provided directly to NGOs, with such support increasing year on year, as confirmed in the below tabular breakdown by relevant sub-funding mechanisms. It is important to note that the Department’s major development NGO partners will also have accessed funding through UN, EU, and other pooled funds, to which Ireland contributes.
