As the National Tourism Development Authority, Fáilte Ireland’s role is to support the long-term sustainable growth in the economic, social, cultural and environmental contribution of tourism to Ireland. Fáilte Ireland works in partnership with Government, State agencies, Local Authorities, representative groups and industry, to develop tourism across Ireland by creating destination development plans and networks, investing in infrastructure, activities, visitor attractions and festivals.
I understand that Fáilte Ireland recognise the necessity for capital investment to unlock the full potential of Dunguaire Castle. Should Galway County Council take ownership of the castle, Fáilte Ireland is committed to supporting the development of its tourism potential. Specifically, their aim is to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the cultural and historical integrity of this remarkable site.
Currently, there are no appropriate active capital grant schemes available to support such projects. When a new suitable scheme opens up, then the project could apply but will be required to meet all the criteria of the scheme. Based on the initial assessment of the site, Fáilte Ireland is of the view that capital investment will be required not just for the necessary critical maintenance but also for the visitor experience in order for it to be market ready. Subject to the project being eligible under the criteria of any new investment programme, and the analysis of a robust business case, Fáilte Ireland may be in a position to partner with Galway County Council and support the visitor experience elements of the project.
