260. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his Department has considered updating the classification and licensing requirements for quadricycles, to bring Ireland more in line with other EU countries such as France and Finland which have quadricycle-specific legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, I wish to advise that Irish driver licensing operates within a framework of EU law - the driver licensing legislation with which all Member States must comply.

The provision of driving licences in Ireland is governed by a framework of EU legislation. The Driving Licence Directive establishes uniform driver training, testing and licensing standards across Europe, allowing member states to recognise all driving licences issued within the EU without compromising road safety. The classification and licensing requirements for quadricycles are currently set out in the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 2006 (SI 537 of 2006). My Department has no current plans to amend these regulations in respect of quadricycles.
