Over the past several years my Department has supported capital development at the National Library of Ireland (NLI) with the following elements delivered to date:

  • A new Book Repository- opened in 2019 with state of the art safety features effectively safeguarding the collection stored within;
  • A new modern Prints Drawings Store- located in the former seminar space in the 1827 Wing which has been refurbished in 2019 and fitted out as a new permanent home for NLI's collection of over 100,000 prints and drawings dating as far back as the 17th century;
  • Refurbishment of the Art Room- completed in 2023 and providing space for use as a Visual Collections Reading Room and Reception for communications & development activities;
  • Relocation and upgrading of the Manuscripts Reading Room- converting a former exhibition space into a modern and accessible Manuscript Reading Room opened in 2023.
A Revised Preliminary Business Case focused on construction works in the West Wing and the NLI Reading Room was approved in 2024. In line with Infrastructure Guidelines, the development of the project is currently in the Pre-tender- Project Design, Planning and Procurement Strategy phase. In preparation for further redevelopment works, the NLI also completed a full decant of the West Wing where opening up and enabling works were carried out. The project has also since been granted planning permission.
