Peace Commissioners are appointed by the Department of Justice Home Affairs and Migration in accordance with section 88 of the Courts of Justice Act, 1924. A person who wishes to be considered for appointment may make an application to the Department.
Some individuals are appointed to the office of Peace Commissioner by virtue of the role or employment that they hold; such appointees are referred to as ex-officio Peace Commissioners.
There are currently 4,449 Peace Commissioners. In addition, there are 264 ex-officio Peace Commissioners.
The Department maintains the Roll of Peace Commissioners and while every effort is made to keep the Roll up to date, the data may include Peace Commissioners who are no longer active.
