I can advise the Deputy that Article 17 of the Dublin III Regulation allows a Member State to take responsibility for examining an asylum claim, based on humanitarian or compassionate grounds, or to unite family members.

I can advise the Deputy that officials have not yet received correspondence from the Italian authorities regarding an Article 17 application made by the person concerned.

If the person referred to has family members legally resident in Ireland it may be open for them to apply to join their family here under my Department’s “Policy on Non-EEA Family Reunification in Ireland”, available here: www.irishimmigration.ie/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Policy-document-on-Non-EEA-family-reunification.pdf.
