This Government is committed to the progressive development of maternity services. I fully acknowledge concerns and questions regarding the provision of maternity services at Portiuncula University Hospital.

The HSE CEO has written to me and provided an update regarding the monitoring of safety and assurance overall at each of the other 18 maternity units and hospitals. The wider policy issues will be encompassed in the work to develop a successor to the National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026 - a Programme for Government commitment.
