The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána. This includes the management of Garda resources, such as the distribution of Gardaí across the country.

The below table, provided to me by the Garda authorities, shows the number of Gardaí deployed on regular policing units in each Garda division in June 2023, June 2024 and to 30 June 2025. It is important to note that around 360 Gardaí are currently in training and 269 have already passed out of Templemore this year. Two more attestations are scheduled for 2025.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 700 and 701 together.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of Garda business. This includes responsibility for the formulation of proposals in relation to the opening and closing of Garda stations.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that under the Garda Station Rationalisation Programmes of 2012 and 2013, one hundred and thirty-nine (139) Garda Stations were closed nationwide. One hundred and thirty-five (135) of these were closed permanently and four were subsequently reopened. The reopened stations are located in Ballinspittle in County Cork, Donard in County Wicklow, and Rush and Stepaside in Dublin.

The stations that were closed permanently are set out in the spreadsheet attached.

A newly built station also opened in 2024 in An Spidéal (Spiddle) on the site of the previous station.

There have been no Garda station closures in the last number of years. The Commissioner has repeatedly said there is no intention to close any stations.

An Garda Síochána also do not police on a station basis, but rather on a Divisional basis, and see stations as locations within communities for people to attend, and for resources to be accommodated. Policing for an area will be delivered using all resources in the Community Engagement Area and supported by Divisional resources and units.

Community policing is at the heart of An Garda Síochána, and all Gardaí have a role to play in community policing in the course of carrying out their duties. Community policing is also fundamental to the new Garda Operating Model which is now fully commenced in all 21 Garda Divisions.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that as of 31 May 2025, the latest date for which figures are available, there are nine Community Gardaí attached to Coolock Garda Station, which includes one Sergeant and eight Gardaí.
