Major international sporting events can play a key role in increasing sporting participation, boosting domestic and international tourism and promoting Ireland as a destination for education and business opportunities. They present a wonderful opportunity to showcase the island of Ireland and our world-class tourism and sports offering to Europe and the world.

At the time of bidding for EURO 2028, the UK and Ireland partnership committed c. £45 million (equivalent to €53 million) to a central Legacy and Impact fund to support the delivery of socio-economic benefits to communities across the UK and Ireland. The majority consisted of funding from governments, with host football associations also contributing to the fund.

Ireland's proportional share of this legacy funding will be contingent on a number of factors including how many tournament matches are played here. Following the publication of the match schedule by UEFA towards the end of this year, I will be in a position to quantify this amount.
