The Department does not issue exporter licences but issues an exporter certificate for all commercial movement of pets. The type of certification is dependent on whether the destination is to other EU countries or non-EU countries.

Commercial movement of pets is defined where a pet, or pets, is either travelling unaccompanied, or is travelling for the use of trading, or for shows, sporting events or where an owner has more than 5 pets travelling.

The number of dogs exported commercially from Ireland in the past five years are listed in tabular form below:

Year Amount
2020 8,993
2021 10,581
2022 7,089
2023 9,440
2024 8,768
Total 44,871
The number of dogs exported commercially from Ireland by destination in the past five years are listed in tabular form in the attachment.
