709. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the reason he exercised his power under the Arts Act 2004 to refuse to consent to the proposal by the Arts Council for the reappointment of its Director; if he disagreed with the business case submitted in support of the proposal; if so, the nature of the disagreement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I understand that the Director is stepping down on the 13th of June and I want to thank her for her contribution to the work of the Arts Council. I would also like to thank her for remaining in her role to represent the Arts Council at the recent Public Accounts Committee and the upcoming Joint Oireachtas Committee.

Under Section 15 of the Arts Act 2003, the Board of the Arts Council appoints the Director with the consent of the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport. This appointment is also subject to the sanction of the Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform. In that regard, I consented to a second term of a length that I deemed appropriate in the circumstances.
