A precise costing for the establishment of a Minor Ailment Scheme cannot be provided without the following information:

  • What conditions or ‘minor ailments’ would be included in such a Scheme.
  • What level of activity for each condition or minor ailment specified would be expected under the Scheme.
  • Whether a consultation fee would be paid to pharmacists for the provision of the services under the scheme, and, if so, at what level.
  • Whether the State would continue to provide payments to GPs for the services they currently provide to medical card holders for the treatment of the specified minor ailments.
Therefore, it is not possible to provide a costing without further clarification on the scope and scale of the proposed Minor Ailment Scheme.
