As Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports, I wish to advise that to drive a vehicle, a driver with an identified or specified illness must meet strict medical standards, which are assessed by an individual’s doctor through a medical report.
Driver fitness standards are based on EU law and international best practice. Annex III of EU Directive 2006/126/EU defines minimum standards of physical and mental fitness for driving a power-driven vehicle.
The Irish guidelines, Sláinte agus Tiomáint – Medical Fitness to Drive Guidelines are intended to assist doctors and other healthcare professionals in advising their patients on fitness to drive. The information in these Guidelines is regularly reviewed and updated, most recently in April 2025.
