Neglect or causing unnecessary suffering to any animal is unacceptable in our society and I am fully committed to the ongoing promotion and enforcement of high animal welfare standards. My Department continues to enforce the law in this important area as does An Garda Síochána, the Customs service, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) and the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA).

The number of persons who received fines, which were less than €5,000, under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, between 2020 to date, is set out below, in tabular form:

Year No. of Persons fined less than €5000 (Under Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013)
2020 3
2021 9
2022 11
2023 17
2024 24

My Department operates a confidential animal welfare helpline through which members of the public can report incidents of animal cruelty or neglect for investigation.
