1049. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if child benefit payments can be backdated in a case in which a parent (details supplied) did not register their child at birth; and if missed payments can be backdated given the child is now registered. [12050/25]

Child Benefit is a monthly payment to the parents or guardians of children under 16 years of age. Child Benefit can also be claimed for children aged 16,17 and 18, if they are in full-time education or full-time training or have a disability and cannot support themselves.

A Child Benefit claim was received from the claimant on 13 December 2024. This was 26 months after the legislative deadline of 12 months and therefore treated as a late claim.

My Department is currently doing a further review into this case and will respond directly to the Deputy in relation to this case in the coming days.

I trust that this clarifies the matter for the Deputy.
