My role with regard to the protection and management of our architectural heritage is set out in the provisions of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended), as are the roles of local authorities and the responsibilities of owners.

Part IV of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, gives primary responsibility to local authorities to identify and protect the architectural heritage in their area by including structures of special interest on the Record of Protected Structures (RPS). Owners who would like their property considered for addition to the RPS should contact their local authority.

My Department provides funding for repair/conservation works to the following types of buildings (or

qualifying structures):

  1. Buildings on the Record of Protected Structures
  2. Buildings eligible or proposed for addition to the Record of Protected Structures
  3. Structures contributing to the character of an Architectural Conservation Area
  4. Vernacular buildings
The building in question may be eligible to apply for funding if it fits into any of the categories set out above. In addition, certain local authorities may run local grant schemes with separate eligibility criteria.

In all instances, a building owner considering applying for conservation grant funding is encouraged to contact their local authority for advice and guidance in the matter.
