I propose to take Questions Nos. 686, 687 and 688 together.

The Office of the State Pathologist (OSP) plays a key role in providing independent expert advice on matters relating to forensic pathology and in performing post mortem examinations in cases where foul play is suspected playing a vital role in Ireland’s Criminal Justice system.

The Office of the State Pathologist currently has four full time consultant forensic pathologists based in Dublin which includes the Chief State Pathologist and three State Pathologists. The OSP is independent of the Minister in the operation of its functions.

The OSP has advised me that in instances where concerns were raised regarding specific post-mortem cases, they were referred to the Irish Medical Council for review as appropriate.

In relation to the specific queries raised by the Deputy concerning numbers of cases, my Department has requested further details from the OSP and I will write to the Deputy once this information is to hand.
