The Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) provides for the refund of the amount by which expenditure on approved prescribed medicines or medical and surgical appliances exceeds a named threshold in any calendar month.
The DPS is not means tested and is available to anyone ordinarily resident in Ireland. The DPS threshold level has been varied as follows:
Time period | Threshold level |
---|---|
1 January 2010 to 31 December 2011 | €120 |
1 January 2012 to 31 December 2012 | €132 |
1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017 | €144 |
1 January 2018 to 31 March 2019 | €134 |
1 April 2019 to 31 October 2020 | €124 |
1 November 2020 to 31 December 2021 | €114 |
1 January 2022 to 28 February 2022 | €100 |
1 March 2022 to present | €80 |
Therefore, currently, under the DPS, no individual or family pays more than €80 a month towards the cost of approved prescribed medicines or medical and surgical appliances. The DPS significantly reduces the cost burden for people with ongoing expenditure on medicines.
