The Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) provides for the refund of the amount by which expenditure on approved prescribed medicines or medical and surgical appliances exceeds a named threshold in any calendar month.

The DPS is not means tested and is available to anyone ordinarily resident in Ireland. The DPS threshold level has been varied as follows:

Time period Threshold level
1 January 2010 to 31 December 2011 €120
1 January 2012 to 31 December 2012 €132
1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017 €144
1 January 2018 to 31 March 2019 €134
1 April 2019 to 31 October 2020 €124
1 November 2020 to 31 December 2021 €114
1 January 2022 to 28 February 2022 €100
1 March 2022 to present €80

Therefore, currently, under the DPS, no individual or family pays more than €80 a month towards the cost of approved prescribed medicines or medical and surgical appliances. The DPS significantly reduces the cost burden for people with ongoing expenditure on medicines.
