1633.To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the valuation Teagasc and an organisation (details supplied) use for progeny of suckler cows when evaluating stars and indexes of suckler cows; if it is market value or an average valuation; if average valuation is used, what figure is used for the value of calves; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed that the Teagasc Beef Farm Systems Model is the source of the economic values used in the calculation of Eurostar indexes of suckler cows.
The current prices for ‘R’ grade cattle used for the progeny of suckler cows are: Weaning Weight €2.71/kg; Carcass Weight €4.68/kg.
The industry Quality Pricing System (QPS) grid prices apply for cattle carcasses above or below the ‘R’ grade. I understand that this data and other matrices concerning breeding indexes of suckler cows are publicly available on the named organisation's website.
I understand that matters regarding beef indices are subject to ongoing engagement by ICBF through a stakeholders forum.
