Irish Ambassadors are appointed by the President on the advice of the Government following nomination by the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The duration of a posting to a diplomatic mission is generally, although not always, between two to four years.

The start dates for all current Irish Ambassadors is provided in tabular form below. However, as a Government decision on their successor determines when the posting of an Ambassador comes to a conclusion, it is not possible to provide the Deputy with a list of dates on which each of these postings will conclude.

An Ambassador may opt to designate a member of the team as Deputy Head of Mission. This, however, depends on location and on circumstances and it is not a diplomatic or civil service grade.
