38. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will ensure that funding is provided to progress the Clontibret to the border N2 road project; if his attention has been drawn to there being an urgent need to upgrade this section of road due to the high volume of traffic and its importance for a large part of the island of Ireland, north and south; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to the National Roads Programme. Under the Roads Acts 1993-2015 and in line with the National Development Plan (NDP), the design and construction of individual national roads is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. This is also subject to the Public Spending Code and the necessary statutory approvals. In this context, TII is best placed to advise you on the status of this project.

While it was not possible to provide funding to advance the N2 Clontibret to the Border project this year, it remains part of the NDP. The delivery programme for the project will be kept under review for next year and considered in terms of the overall funding envelope available for the national roads programme.

Noting the above position, I have referred your question to TII for an update as to the current status of this project. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.
