The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the official source of estimates of employment in the State.

The most recent figures available are for Q1 2019 when the number of persons aged 15 years and over in employment was 2,301,900.

The survey does not currently collect information on contracted hours for persons in employment. Instead information is collected on the hours that respondents usually work per week and the actual hours that respondents worked in the reference week. Data on the number of persons in employment classified by usual hours of work is published as part of the suite of tables in the quarterly release.

Information on contracted hours for persons in employment will be collected in the LFS as part of the new Integrated European & Social Statistics (IESS) Framework Regulation which will come into effect from January 2021.

The following table shows the number of persons aged 15 years and over in employment classified by usual hours worked (3<21 hours), Q1 2019.
