182. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that insurance companies are using leased taxi plates to drive up driver insurance premiums on the basis that a leased taxi plate remains in the ownership of the licence holder as does the insurance policy attached to it, thus not allowing the lessee to benefit from a no claims bonus on the leaser’s policy; the steps he will take in this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While I am not aware of the practice mentioned by the Deputy in this question, motor insurance is essentially a private transaction between the insured person and the insurance company. Unfortunately, as such I have no role in the matter.
