21. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality her views on the evidence provided to the historical institutional abuse inquiry in the North of Ireland that An Garda Síochána was aware that a person (details supplied) was a paedophile in 1973; the actions she plans to take following these revelations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Commissioner has appointed a Detective Superintendent to conduct an in-depth review of Garda files and records in order to ascertain the facts surrounding the information referred to by the Deputy. This review is currently ongoing.

Insofar as the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry is concerned, the Deputy will appreciate, of course, that this is an independent statutory inquiry established by and reporting to the Northern Ireland Executive. This inquiry process is ongoing and any conclusions or findings of relevance to this jurisdiction will be studied as and when they are made, taking into account in particular the historical inquiries which have already been carried out in this jurisdiction.
