Question 148: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if he will support the Diabetes Action Group proposal in seeking the reorganisation of existing paediatric diabetes services into eight regional networks, with the Dublin network acting as a tertiary hub of excellence, including the appointment of one additional diabetes nurse specialist and one dietician to support future access to new treatments for diabetes here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The HSE established a National Clinical Programme for Diabetes within the Clinical Strategy and Programmes Directorate. A clinical lead is in charge of the programme and a multi-disciplinary working group, representing a number of nursing and allied health professionals, podiatrists and GPs, as well as the Diabetes Federation of Ireland are working through a number of key projects. The key deliverables for the 2011 programme are the implementation of projects such as Diabetes Retinopathy Screening and a multi-disciplinary foot care package for patients with Diabetes.

The HSE has also established a National Clinical Programme for Paediatrics, which will examine in detail the whole area of improved services for children and adolescents and develop solutions to address the issues identified.
