In October 2009, following consultations with my Government colleagues, I announced the establishment of an independent review, the "Drogheda Review", to advise on whether any additional information or insights, which would be of significant public benefit, are likely to be achieved from a further investigation in relation to the case of Mr. Michael Shine.

I appointed retired High Court Judge Mr. T.C. Smyth to chair the Review and emphasised that the examination should have regard to the views of groups or individuals representing complainants. The Review is due to be completed in the near future and consideration of the review report will clearly inform any future decisions on the issues involved.
