Question 131: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position regarding the merger of the Competition Authority with the National Consumer Agency as announced in Building Ireland's Smart Economy: A Framework for Sustainable Economic Renewal report; when the merger will be expected to take place; and the costs involved. Work is underway on the legislation required to implement the merger of the Competition Authority and the National Consumer Agency and I hope to publish this legislation during the course of 2010.
Whilst it is expected that the synergies arising from the merger of the two bodies will result in savings to the exchequer, particularly in areas such as shared services, it is not possible to precisely quantify the amount of savings involved at this stage. Similarly it is too early to quantify costs involved in the merger.
