Question 224: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the reason there is a waiting list of 12 to 18 months for a drug in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Longford which negates the benefit of the treatment and leaves patients fearful of the adverse progression of the disease in the intervening time; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The issue of access to the drug in question is being given consideration by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Arising from a recent review of neurology services a clinician led review group is to advise on how best to ensure that there is fair and equitable access to the drug and other agents used to treat the particular condition, taking account of clinical need, benefits and cost. The Group is to include patient representation.

My Department has requested the Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Executive to reply directly to the Deputy on the specific case raised.
