Question 33: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the increasing number of people on the social housing waiting lists here; and if he plans to reverse the 1999 prohibition on social housing provision on Office of Public Works lands transferred to local authorities. On 9 December 2008 I published preliminary results of the Housing Needs Assessment 2008 carried out in accordance with the terms of the Housing Act, 1988. The assessment took place in March 2008 and indicated that there were 56,249 households in need of social housing support, an increase of some 30% on the corresponding figure in 2005. Further information regarding the assessment is available on my Department's website at www.environ.ie, including a breakdown of the net need figure by housing authority.
I am not aware of the 1999 prohibition on social housing provision on Office of Public Works lands transferred to local authorities referred to in the question.
