Question 342: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the rationale used to arrive at an across the board €200 tax imposed in budget 2009 on all second houses regardless of location, valuation, size or potential to yield rental income; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The proposed charge on non-principal private residences is set at a relatively modest level and should not, therefore, give rise to concerns of equity in the context of those to whom it will apply.
It is intended that the charge should be as simple and straightforward to administer as possible. This is an important principle in the introduction of any new taxation measure.
