The collection of domestic waste at Orchard Park is carried out on a weekly basis, on Thursday. I understand that there was a failure to collect refuse in Orchard Park on 27 March 2008, this was due to a breakdown of the waste collection vehicle, however an alternative collection was then made on 1 April 2008.

The Defence Forces have a contract with Greyhound Recycling and Recovery Ltd. for collection, on a weekly basis, of domestic refuse in Orchard Park. The annual cost of this contract is €29,510.

The majority of houses in Orchard Park are now in private ownership. Accordingly neither my Department nor the Defence Forces are obliged to provide a waste collection service. My Department is in discussion with Kildare County Council with a view to them "taking in charge" the roads and services in this area. It is intended to discontinue the waste collection by the Defence Forces to coincide with the hand-over. Each of the householders in Orchard Park will be advised to make alternative arrangement for waste collection well in advance of the hand-over.
