The information sought by the Deputy in respect of 2006 and 2007 to date is set out in the Table. Collation of information regarding expenditure in previous years is not readily available and could not be achieved without the allocation of a disproportionate amount of staff time.
As the Deputy will be aware, my Department has an extensive range of functions and it follows that there is an almost continuous requirement to put notifications of significance into the public domain, including with respect to such matters as tender and recruitment competitions, legislative announcements and the invitation of submissions on policy matters or subjects under public inquiry. The expenditure outlined also arises from the need to use effective and high profile means of raising awareness on matters of important public interest. In keeping with the broad range of activities and programmes underway in my Department, this has arisen in such diverse areas as, for example, anti-racism, combatting domestic violence and campaigns to raise awareness of the penalties associated with the misuse of fireworks.
