I am informed by the Garda authorities that the attested strength (all ranks) of An Garda Síochána on 30 June 2007 stood at 13,363, with also more than a thousand recruits in training. This compares with a strength of 10,702 (all ranks) on 30 June, 1997 and represents an increase of 2,661 in the attested strength of the Force during that period. The current accelerated intake of recruits into the Garda College will continue in order to meet the new Government target strength of 16,000.
