Question 132: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if she will confirm, as reported by the December 2006 Woodmark Audit of Coillte Teo for the Forest Stewardship Council's renewal of certification that Coillte Teo is reporting to the Government a broadleaf planting rate based on the number of stems planted rather than the area planted, giving a false picture of the broadleaf cover compared to the conifer cover rate as broadleaves require a far greater stocking density for the same area compared to conifers.. The Woodmark Audit Report of 2007 refers to Coillte basing their broadleaf restocking as distinct from new planting target, on the number of trees planted.

This Audit Report is made in the context of the continued certification of Coillte by the internationally renowned and respected Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC).

The national broadleaf planting target of 30% of all new forestry planting is set in relation to hectarage and this target is being met. The two assessment criteria used relate to different issues.
