The Irish Red Cross Society is not a State Board but a charitable autonomous body run by the Central Council through its Executive Committee. The Central Council of the Irish Red Cross Society consists of members elected by the various Society Areas throughout the country and of members nominated by Government. It is statutorily prescribed that not less than one third of the total membership of the Central Council of the Red Cross Society are nominated by the Government to serve for a three year period. The period covered by the question encompasses 3 such periods.
For the period ended 30/4/03, the Government nominated 17 members to the Central Council (13 Male, 4 Female). For the period ended 30/4/06, the Government nominated 17 members to the Central Council (11 Male, 6 Female). For the period ending 30/4/09, the Government nominated 17 members to the Central Council (10 Male, 7 Female). A Male member subsequently resigned on 7 December 2006 and was replaced by a Female member on 31 January 2007 making the current gender breakdown of the Government Nominees to the Central Council 9 Males & 8 Females.
