Question 224: To ask the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the reason the signposts for Dingle/Daingean Uí Chúis have had the English version of the name taped over while towns such as Dungloe, Belmullet, Ballyvourney and Spiddal have not had bilingual signposts interfered with. Question 229: To ask the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs if he will accede to the request of Kerry County Council to have the bilingual names of Dingle and Daingean Uí Chúis restored following the plebiscite which supported this view. [13318/07]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 224 and 229 together.

Kerry County Council held a plebiscite in October 2006 in the non-municipal town of An Daingean and subsequently made a submission to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government requesting that the Government make an Order under the Local Government Act 1946 to change the name of the town to Dingle Daingean Uí Chúis. However, it is not within my power under the Official Languages Act to declare an English language or a bilingual placename as proposed in the question put to the local plebiscite and this was made clear to the County Council at all times.

The signposts referred to are maintained by the relevant County Councils and I have no operational role in the matter.
