Question 431: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if, in view of the fact that there was excessive radon levels in a third of schools here, his Department has plans or carried out tests for excessive radon levels in buildings under the control of or used by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department engaged the services of a private company, on 5 April 2005, to test all buildings under the control of the Department for levels of radon gas. Tests have been carried out to-date on all of the Department's main offices and it is expected that testing of the remaining offices will be completed in the coming months. In cases where high levels of radon are detected remedial action will be taken following consultation with the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and the Office of Public Works.
