Question 345: To ask the Minister for Social and Family Affairs if, in view of the fact that there was excessive radon levels in a third of schools here, his Department has plans or carried out tests for excessive radon levels in buildings under the control of or used by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department undertook a programme to have all of the Department's 140 offices tested for radon levels in 2004. To date over 100 offices have been tested with the remaining 40 expected to be completed by early 2007. Of the offices tested, 5 indicated radon levels above the National reference Level. An approved company has carried out remedial work in these locations and the offices were re-tested and the radon levels are reduced and are now below the National reference Level.
During the course of this programme my Department has kept the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland appraised of the situation in accordance with the relevant legislation.
