Question 266: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the nature of the scheme for the upgrading of school buses being operated by her Department; if it applies to private bus operators and the operators of minibuses used for school runs in areas where populations do not warrant a large bus; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Contractors are being encouraged to replace larger older buses with more modern buses equipped with manufacturer fitted seat belts, or with buses fitted with seat belt anchorage points by the vehicle manufacturer to which type approved belts have been subsequently installed. The fittings must conform to the standards contained in the guidelines published by the Department of Transport for the installation of safety belts. In general, minibuses tend to be younger than larger buses and come equipped with manufacturer fitted seat belts.

The negotiation and awarding of contracts is an operational matter between Bus Éireann and the individual contractor.
