Road traffic legislation is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Transport. The law pertaining to exhaust systems on vehicles is contained in section 29(1) of the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations 1963, as amended.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the following table shows the number of proceedings commenced and convictions for an offence under section 29(1) up to 12 October 2006.
Year | Proceedings commenced | Convictions |
2006* | 570 | 139 |
2005 | 663 | 299 |
2004 | 114 | 53 |
2003 | 66 | 31 |
2002 | 66 | 28 |
