Question 397: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in view of recent high profile bank raids, a process exists for the vetting by financial institutions of applicants for jobs, to assess if they have criminal records; his plans in relation to the introduction of such a system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is a matter for the financial institutions to determine, through their own recruitment practices and internal security arrangements, adequate selection and ongoing supervision of their employees.
There are no plans to introduce a system of State-provided vetting for prospective employees of private sector financial institutions. However, the Private Security Authority has put in place stringent criteria to ensure the private security industry operates to a high standard. In this regard, all applicants for a licence must undergo criminal record checks by the Garda Síochána.
