Question 454: To ask the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs if there are existing or proposed restrictions relating to development on private lands on the approaches to any airport runway in the Gaeltacht or the islands; if so, if such restrictions have been designated by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has no function in regard to the placing of restrictions on developments on private lands on the approaches to airport runways. As the Deputy will be aware, the granting or otherwise of planning permission for the development of lands is a matter for the planning authorities. I understand, however, that, under the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, S.I. No. 600, section 28, the planning authorities are obliged to seek the views of the Irish Aviation Authority prior to making a decision on a planning application, the granting of which may have an impact on the safety of the approach to an airport runway.
