The North-South section of my Department is responsible for supporting, monitoring and liaising with Waterways Ireland and An Foras Teanga — the two North-South Implementation Bodies jointly co-sponsored and co-funded by the Department with the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure in Northern Ireland and for the management of our funding for cross border initiatives under the PEACE and INTERREG programmes. Additional priorities for the North-South section are to advance consideration of the re-opening of the Ulster Canal, to support the successful decentralisation of staff of Foras na Gaeilge to Donegal, and to promote the continued development of contacts and close co-operation with Northern Ireland.
