Question 509: To ask the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the discussions he has had with BCI regarding the establishment of an Irish language pop radio station catering for the 15-35 age group as part of a strategy of widening the appeal of and support for the Irish language; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As I outlined in my reply to Question No. 47 of 22 February 2005, the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, BCI, recently conducted a survey to determine the level of interest among the younger generation in Irish language radio programmes. The survey was co-funded by the commission, by my Department and Foras na Gaeilge. The BCI published the results of the survey on 20 January 2005. As I have already outlined to the House, this issue was brought forward in the context of the report of Coimisiún na Gaeltachta and in subsequent discussions by the advisory committee established by me to advise in regard to practical actions to implement the recommendations of the coimisiún.
