Question 119: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children the reason medical card holders are charged by general practitioners for signing renewal of licence forms; if she will consider including this service under the medical card; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The general medical services contract which general practitioners participating in the GMS hold with the local area of the Health Service Executive provides for the issue of first and final certificates to explain work absence free of charge for medical card holders regardless of age. General practitioners are not obliged to provide examinations and certificates in respect of requirements of life assurance for insurance companies or licensing authorities free of charge. I have no plans to change the current provisions.
