Question 1364: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if the Government will honour its commitment to the European civil protection mechanism and send firefighters to assist disaster relief in the tsunami-affected regions; if not, the reason therefor; and the further reason no fire fighters were sent to Bam, Iran, in 2004 when the mechanism was last activated. No formal request for search and rescue assistance was received through the EU monitoring and information centre in respect of the recent tsunami disaster. As indicated in the replies to Questions Nos. 954 and 955 of 27 January 2004 and Question No. 65 of 29 April 2004, Ireland was not in a position to send search and rescue teams to Bam at the time of the earthquake in 2004.
